INSTRUCTION SHEET FOR WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL

You will not be under general anesthesia, but the sensation for you is nearly the same. After the intravenous (I.V.) line is started and the medication is put into the IN., most people do not remember anything.

IV. Sedation is usually performed with a mixture of Demerol and Valium.

You do not have to have sedation.

As far as you are concerned, it will be like being “out”.

IV. Sedation is less risky than general anesthesia.

BEFORE WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL

Nothing by mouth four (4) hours prior to the appointment, except for medications. Please notify us of any medication you are taking since we may change the dose.

Wear a T-shirt or a loose fitting top. You must be able to push your sleeves up high enough to get a blood-pressure cuff comfortably on your upper arm.

For your own safety, you will not be permitted to drive yourself home. Please make arrangements for someone to drive you.

AFTER WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL, your doctor may have you on a liquid diet for two days. Also, some people will have a queasy stomach after IV. Sedation. It is best to “stock” your house before the appointment with liquid dietary items (because you will probably not feel like going to the store after your appointment.) If your stomach is queasy, it is best to start off with light liquids (water, soda pop, fruit juice, gelatin, Popsicles), then AFTER WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL and you are feeling better move on to heavy liquids (ice cream, milk shakes, “instant breakfast”, pudding, applesauce, tomato soup, broth.)
